Africa with Kids: the 4 Best Countries for a Family Trip
Yes, you can take the kids. 🧳
"Isn't Africa too complicated with children?" No. It is just different to plan. The right country, the right season, the right pace, and kids come back with stories no theme park will ever give them.
Four countries stand out for families. Two for wildlife, two for an easy first contact with West Africa.

Kenya 🇰🇪
The safari kids talk about for years.

Kenya is the classic. Lions, elephants, giraffes, and in the Masai Mara from July to October, the Great Migration.
What works with kids:
Start in Nairobi. Feed giraffes at eye level at the Giraffe Centre. Watch baby elephants come in for their bottle at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust orphanage (book ahead).
Choose a private conservancy over the main reserve. Fewer vehicles, flexible game drive times, often a private vehicle. With kids, the real luxury is your own rhythm.
Finish on the coast. A few days on Diani beach after the safari. Everybody needs it.
⚠️ The real talk: many safari camps set a minimum age, often around 6 for game drives and higher for walking safaris. Check before you book, not when you arrive. And every traveller needs a Kenyan eTA, babies included.
👶 Best age: 6 and up gets the most out of it.
South Africa 🇿🇦
The easiest safari on the continent.

Good roads, good hospitals, no jet lag in summer, and above all: malaria-free reserves.
What works with kids:
Pick a malaria-free reserve. Madikwe, Pilanesberg or the Eastern Cape reserves, including Addo Elephant National Park. No preventive treatment for the little ones.
Combine with Cape Town. The penguins of Boulders Beach, Table Mountain by cable car, the beaches of the peninsula. A safari and a city break in one trip.
Self-drive in Kruger. For families who like independence, the SANParks rest camps are safe, fenced and simple.
⚠️ The real talk: bring each child's full birth certificate showing both parents. If one parent travels alone with the children, add a signed consent letter from the other parent. Border officers can ask for both.
👶 Best age: from toddlers up, as long as you choose a malaria-free area.
Planning a family trip? I design family trips to Africa that work for the parents as much as for the kids.
Senegal 🇸🇳
Africa, one short flight away.

Five and a half hours from Paris, almost no jet lag, French spoken everywhere. For a first family trip to Africa, Senegal removes almost every barrier.
What works with kids:
A mini safari at the Bandia reserve. Near Saly, about an hour from Dakar. Giraffes, rhinos and zebras from an open vehicle, in one morning. Perfect for little ones who will not sit in a jeep for six hours.
The Sine Saloum by pirogue. Mangroves, birds, shell islands, villages. A gentle adventure.
Gorée Island. For older children, the House of Slaves is a powerful history lesson. Prepare them before you go.
The Petite Côte for beach days. Saly, Somone, Popenguine.
⚠️ The real talk: malaria is present, so talk to your paediatrician about prevention. And Dakar traffic is real: base yourselves on the coast, not in the city.
👶 Best age: all ages. This is the gentlest entry point to Africa.
Côte d'Ivoire 🇨🇮
Beach, family and roots.

Côte d'Ivoire is where many diaspora families go home. And it is a great family destination in its own right.
What works with kids:
Assinie for the beach. Between the lagoon and the ocean, an hour or two from Abidjan. Pirogue trips, calm lagoon water for little ones, ocean for the big ones.
Grand-Bassam. The old colonial capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its faded façades and its beach. An easy day out.
Banco National Park. A rainforest inside Abidjan. Short walks, giant trees, a first jungle for city kids.
⚠️ The real talk: the yellow fever certificate is mandatory, for children too. Babies too young to be vaccinated need a medical exemption certificate from your doctor. Sort it out early, and plan malaria prevention.
👶 Best age: all ages, with the vaccination calendar in mind.
The family checklist
💉 See a travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before departure. Vaccines, malaria prevention, and the right doses for each child.
🏠 One base for every 3 or 4 nights. Kids hate packing every morning. So do you.
🛩️ Fewer long drives, more domestic flights. In Kenya especially, a short bush flight saves a day on the road.
😴 A slow afternoon every day. Pool, nap, sand. Game drives at dawn and dusk, rest in between.
🛏️ Ask for family rooms or connected tents when you book. Not all camps have them.
🩹 Pack a small medical kit. Rehydration salts, fever medicine, plasters, sunscreen, child-safe repellent.
Your questions
Which country is best for a first family trip to Africa?
Senegal if you want a short flight and French spoken everywhere. South Africa if you want a safari without malaria. Kenya if your children are 6 or older and dream of lions.
Do my children need vaccines?
It depends on the country. Côte d'Ivoire requires the yellow fever certificate, for children too. For all four, see a travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before departure for vaccines and malaria prevention.
What is the best age for a safari?
Many camps set a minimum age, often around 6 for game drives and higher for walking safaris. With younger children, South Africa's malaria-free reserves are the easiest choice.
I am travelling alone with my children. Anything special?
For South Africa, bring each child's full birth certificate showing both parents, plus a signed consent letter from the other parent. Border officers can ask for both.
A family trip, built around your children
The right camp for their age, the right pace for their energy, the plan B when someone gets sick. That is exactly what I build.
