Africa's Major Festivals: a 12-Month Calendar

Oct 1
6 min read

Arrive when the country celebrates. 🥁

The best way to understand a country is to land when it's partying, praying or remembering. A festival shows you its music, food, fashion and faith in a few days. It also fills every hotel in town. So you plan early, or you don't go.

Here are 11 festivals worth building a trip around, from October 2026 to August 2027.

October to January: high season 🔥

The dry season, the diaspora coming home, and the biggest celebrations of the year.

1. Abissa

📍 Grand-Bassam, Côte d'Ivoire · 📅 25 Oct – 8 Nov 2026

The New Year of the N'Zima people, celebrated for more than three centuries in the old colonial capital, a UNESCO World Heritage town. A week of silence for the ancestors, then a week of drums, dances, costumes and public satire: during Abissa, everyone can say out loud what went wrong in the year. The 2026 edition runs from 25 October to 8 November.

🎯 Go for: a tradition you won't see anywhere else, 40 km from Abidjan.

2. AfroFuture and Detty December

📍 Accra, Ghana · 📅 Late December 2026

Every December, Accra becomes the capital of the diaspora. Concerts, parties, fashion shows, weddings, homecomings. AfroFuture, formerly Afrochella, is the flagship festival, usually held on 28 and 29 December.

🎯 Go for: the energy, and a New Year's Eve you'll remember.

⚠️ The real talk: prices for flights, hotels and drivers climb fast. Book by the summer.

3. Vodun Days

📍 Ouidah, Benin · 📅 2 – 9 Jan 2027

The celebration of Vodun arts, culture and spirituality, in the city of the Door of No Return. Zangbeto and Egungun masks, processions, ceremonies, concerts on the beach. The 2027 edition grows to eight days, from 2 to 9 January, around Benin's national day of traditional religions.

🎯 Go for: the most powerful cultural moment in West Africa for the diaspora.

⚠️ The real talk: Ouidah has few hotels and they fill months ahead. Ask a local guide what to wear and what not to photograph.

4. Timkat

📍 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia · 📅 19 Jan 2027

The Ethiopian Orthodox Epiphany. Processions of priests carrying the tabots, white robes, chanting, then a mass blessing with water at dawn. In Addis Ababa, the celebration at Jan Meda is huge and easy to join.

🎯 Go for: one of the oldest Christian traditions in the world, in full colour.

⚠️ The real talk: the famous celebrations of Gondar and Lalibela are in the Amhara region, affected by conflict. Check the situation before you plan. Addis is the simple choice.

Got a festival in mind? I book the hotel before it fills and build the days before and after, so the festival becomes a real trip.

March: the busiest month 🎶

Music in Zanzibar, cinema in Ouagadougou, paragliding in Ghana. Same month.

5. Sauti za Busara

📍 Stone Town, Zanzibar · 📅 19 – 21 Mar 2027

Stone Town, Zanzibar. Photos: Aron Marinelli, Alferio Njau

Three nights of live African music inside the Old Fort of Stone Town. Taarab, Afro-fusion, hip hop, jazz, and the whole island dancing. The 24th edition runs from 19 to 21 March 2027, moved later in March to avoid Ramadan.

🎯 Go for: music, then a week of beach. The perfect pairing.

6. FESPACO

📍 Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso · 📅 20 – 27 Mar 2027

The biggest film festival on the continent, held every two years in Ouagadougou since 1969. The 30th edition, a milestone anniversary, runs from 20 to 27 March 2027 with Togo as guest of honour. Screenings, the race for the Étalon d'or de Yennenga, and a whole city living cinema for a week.

🎯 Go for: African cinema at its source, in a capital that treats its filmmakers like stars.

⚠️ The real talk: Burkina Faso is under a formal French travel advisory. Check that your travel insurance covers it, travel with a trusted local contact and organised transfers, and stay in Ouagadougou.

7. Kwahu Easter

📍 Kwahu Plateau, Ghana · 📅 Easter weekend, 28 Mar 2027

At Easter, Ghana goes up the mountain. The towns of the Kwahu Plateau fill with homecomings, street parties and, above all, paragliders taking off over the Afram plains.

🎯 Go for: a tandem flight, then a party with half of Accra.

8. FEMUA

📍 Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire · 📅 Spring 2027

The Festival des Musiques Urbaines d'Anoumabo, founded by Magic System in their home neighbourhood. Coupé-décalé, Afrobeats, rap ivoire, big names and a community programme.

🎯 Go for: Abidjan at its loudest, and the best of Ivorian music.

June to August: summer of culture ☀️

Sacred music by the ocean, memory on the coast, art in the street.

9. Gnaoua and World Music Festival

📍 Essaouira, Morocco · 📅 Late June 2027

The gnaoua masters, the maâlems, meet jazz, blues and world music stars on free stages across the medina. Gnaoua music is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. The 2026 edition ran from 25 to 27 June with 460 artists. Expect late June again.

🎯 Go for: a sacred African music tradition, live, by the ocean.

10. PANAFEST and Emancipation Day

📍 Cape Coast, Ghana · 📅 Late July – 1 Aug 2027

The Pan-African festival of memory and return, held every two years, ending with Emancipation Day on 1 August. Ceremonies at Cape Coast and Elmina castles, the Reverential Night, art, debates, reunions.

🎯 Go for: if you're from the diaspora, this one may change you.

⚠️ The real talk: dates are announced late. Watch the official channels from early 2027.

11. Chale Wote Street Art Festival

📍 James Town, Accra, Ghana · 📅 Mid-August 2027

Every August, the old fishing quarter of James Town becomes an open-air gallery. Murals, performances, processions, film, fashion, and it's free. The 2026 edition ran from 10 to 17 August under the theme Carnival of the Black Sun.

🎯 Go for: the creative pulse of Accra, outside of December.

How to do a festival right

  • 🛏️ Book accommodation first, flights second. In Ouidah, Stone Town or Accra in December, rooms run out before seats.

  • 📆 Arrive a day early, leave a day late. Festival days are intense. Give yourself a buffer.

  • 🙏🏾 Learn the codes. Vodun ceremonies, Timkat processions and Abissa rituals are sacred moments. Ask before you photograph.

  • 🚶🏾‍♀️ Go beyond the main stage. The best moments are often in the side events, the street, the family compound.

  • 🔁 Check dates twice. African festivals often confirm late and sometimes move.

Your questions

Which festival for a first trip?

Sauti za Busara if you want music and a beach week after. Gnaoua for an easy long weekend from Europe. Detty December if you want the party and accept the prices.

Six months or more for Detty December and Vodun Days. Accommodation first, then flights.

Ask first, every time. Some moments of Vodun ceremonies and Abissa rituals are not meant to be photographed. A local guide will tell you.

Vodun Days, Sauti za Busara, FESPACO and Timkat are set. FEMUA, Gnaoua, PANAFEST and Chale Wote are based on past editions. Confirm before you book flights.

Your trip, built around a festival

The right hotel booked before it fills, the access that makes the difference, the days before and after that turn a festival into a real trip. I design tailor-made trips around Africa's great celebrations.
