Africa's Most Acclaimed Tables: 12 Places Worth the Trip

Oct 1
5 min read

Africa is a food destination. 🍽️

Most people don't see it that way yet. They should. From a fishing village on the South African coast to a table facing the pyramids of Giza, the continent now has restaurants in the global rankings, and chefs who are rewriting what African food means.

Here are 12 tables worth planning a trip around.

💬 One honest note first. The big lists lean towards South Africa and North Africa, because that is where the award circuits vote. West Africa's greatest food often happens outside a classic restaurant: at a nomadic dinner, on a mat, in a chop bar. So this list includes both.

South Africa 🇿🇦

The continent's fine dining capital.

Wolfgat

📍 Paternoster · 🏆 No. 46 in the world, 2025

A tiny restaurant in a whitewashed cottage, in a fishing village on the West Coast, about two hours from Cape Town. The cooking is built on what grows wild on the Strandveld coast and what the sea brings in. Very few seats. Book months ahead.

FYN

📍 Cape Town · 🏆 Eat Out Restaurant of the Year 2026

Cape ingredients, Japanese precision. FYN reached No. 37 in the world in 2022 and was named Best Restaurant in Africa that year. In 2026, it was named Restaurant of the Year at the Eat Out awards, South Africa's national reference.

La Colombe

📍 Constantia, Cape Town · 🏆 Six times on The World's 50 Best

In the vineyards above Cape Town. The classic. Pair it with a day in the Constantia wine estates.

💡 Our tip: Cape Town is the easiest city in Africa to plan a food trip around. Three of these tables are within an hour of each other.

North Africa 🇪🇬 🇲🇦 🇹🇳

Ancient wonders, new tables.

Khufu's

📍 Giza, Egypt · 🏆 Best Restaurant in MENA 2026

Inside the perimeter of the Giza pyramid complex, with an open view of the last standing wonder of the ancient world. Modern Egyptian cooking rooted in a cuisine that goes back millennia. Named the Best Restaurant in the Middle East and North Africa 2026. Book lunch, for the light on the stones.

Table 3

📍 Casablanca, Morocco · 🏆 Best Restaurant in Morocco 2026

A newcomer that went straight to Best Restaurant in Morocco 2026. Proof that Casablanca deserves more than a stopover.

Le Petit Cornichon

📍 Marrakech, Morocco · 🏆 No. 21, MENA's 50 Best 2026

Chef-owner Erwann Lance blends the energy of a bistro with high gastronomy.

Farmers

📍 Marrakech, Morocco · 🏆 Sustainable Restaurant Award, MENA 2026

For travellers who want to know exactly where their food comes from.

Le Golfe

📍 La Marsa, Tunisia · 🏆 Best Restaurant in Tunisia 2026

A Mediterranean table in the seaside suburb north of Tunis.

Dreaming of a food trip? I build itineraries around the table: the right reservation, the market before, the producer after.

East Africa 🇰🇪

Cultiva

📍 Karen, Nairobi · 🏆 Food & Wine Global Tastemakers

In the leafy suburb of Karen, Cultiva cooks produce from its own farm, picked the same day. It was ranked No. 9 among the best international restaurants in Food & Wine's Global Tastemakers awards. The perfect first or last dinner around a safari.

West Africa 🇬🇭

Where the revolution happens off the menu.

Midunu

📍 Accra · 🏆 New African Cuisine

Chef Selassie Atadika calls it New African Cuisine: traditional grains, forgotten ingredients, seasonal produce, and her own chocolates to finish. Midunu runs nomadic and private dinners rather than a fixed dining room. You don't walk in. You get invited, or you book ahead.

Dine on a Mat

📍 Accra · 🏆 Basque Culinary World Prize 2022

Fatmata Binta, born in Freetown to a Fulani family, became the first African chef to win the Basque Culinary World Prize. Her dinners are served the Fulani way: on a mat, with your hands, with fonio, millet, baobab. In 2025, she was named FAO Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Africa. Dinners are pop-ups: follow her dates.

Ghana Food Movement

📍 Accra · 🏆 Champions of Change 2026

Not a restaurant, a movement. This youth-led non-profit works with farmers, chefs and schools to put Ghanaian ingredients back at the centre of the plate. In 2026, it received the Champions of Change Award from The World's 50 Best Restaurants. If you care about where African food is going, this is where to look.

And the street? 🔥

No ranking will ever list it. It's half the story.

Puff-puff, a West African street favourite. Photo: Keesha's Kitchen

The thiéboudienne at a Dakar institution like Chez Loutcha, on the Plateau. Waakye at dawn from a roadside stall in Accra. Suya grilled over charcoal in Lagos at night. Garba in Abidjan. If you only eat in award-winning dining rooms, you haven't eaten in Africa.

Before you book

  • 📅 Book early. Wolfgat, FYN and Khufu's fill up weeks or months ahead.

  • 👩🏾‍🍳 Follow the chefs, not just the addresses. In Accra, the best dinners are pop-ups and private tables. Dates are announced on the chefs' own channels.

  • ✅ Check the status. Restaurants open, move and close. Confirm before you build a day around one.

  • ⚖️ Mix high and low. One tasting menu, three street meals. That's the right ratio.

Eat where it's busy, where the food is cooked hot in front of you, and drink bottled water. The queue of locals is the best review you'll find.

A trip built around the table

A food trip to Cape Town, Marrakech or Accra is not a list of reservations. It's the right table on the right night, the market visit before, the producer you meet after. I design tailor-made food itineraries across Africa.
